It wasn’t long ago that setting up a web site was the proper thing to do. Next thing I know, blogs became the popular thing and everyone stampeded to put up their blog and began blogging. But that is now history, and today is today. All the talk at this point is of “Social Media” with Twitter and Facebook at the top of the list. It’s the newest phase in online communication, it’s the newest phase in community, and as you might expect, it’s starting to catch the eye of businesses and marketers too.

It’s amazing to see movie stars, athletes, news reporters and famous names from @StephenColbert to @AndyDick to @KellyClarkson to @StephenFry and beyond, are racing to position themselves as part of the Twitter elite.

However Twitter is much more incredible than that. Truth be told, Twitter is a local area connection tool too. It’s likely your town government is using Twitter, your local TV news, your local Fire Department, your favorite bookstore, your community college, even the guy that cut your hair last week. If they are not on Twitter today, it’s just a matter of time.

But there’s another audience making its mark on Twitter. It’s a tidal shift of a more serious nature whereby business owners (both large and small) including entrepreneurs and home-based businesses are starting to tap the magical potential of Twitter. When you observe established companies such as: @HRBlock, @intuit or @traderjoes piling on to the Twitter bandwagon, it’s without doubt time to take notice.

Perhaps this “craze” boils down to the enduring fact that a lot of business actually occurs in social gatherings, at cocktail parties, on the golf course, and at various other social events. Now, through Twitter it’s easy to benefit from an online version of a non-stop 24 hour, 7 day a week cocktail party of incredible proportions.

It’s impossible to overlook some of these statistics and stories:

  • Pam O’Neil, VP of Marketing at BreakingPoint said, “Twitter has all but replaced our PR agency, [at times] resulted in a huge spike in web traffic and deals with major service providers.”
  • “Domain provider, NameCheap’s Twitter campaign earned them over 4000 Twitter followers, a 47% increase in new visitors and a 20% increase in new customers.”
  • “Unique Visitors to Twitter are dominated by 2,935,000 in the 35-49 age range (41.7%)”
  • “One in three marketers indicated identifying the best practices, measuring results and knowing where to begin as their top questions when marketing with social media.”

What does all this mean? It means that if you are an entrepreneur or are involved with any business, you must not hesitate to head over to Twitter and set up your own Twitter account.

Simple enough?

Well, not quite. Once you have your account opened, that’s when the mystery begins. It’s a very very basic concept, but like playing poker, unless you have a clear strategy, you’re going to soon be scratching your head.

Thankfully, there’s help. Internet strategist and social media marketing expert, Dan Hollings has spent the past year researching and testing Twitter strategies for business. Along the way, Dan wrote 100 extremely helpful Twitter tips for business. Next he created a browser toolbar for Mac or PC that puts over 235 Twitter tools, tips and apps within one-click of your Twitter activities. Recently, he released his “tour de force” Twitter training program called, “Twitter Twenius” (that’s Twitter-talk for genius).

Here is a sample Twitter tip, to get your juices flowing:

Followers are fiction whereas listeners are fact. In Twitter, you want more fact than fiction.

It goes without saying that there’s so much more to learn, however if you’re looking for the money in Twitter or a way to rev-up the Twitter afterburners on all your promotional campaigns from local to international, I recommend Twitter Twenius.
